In 1927 The Ahwahnee hotels sixth floor was originally opened as a ballroom for special events and parties until it was discovered that the clinking of glassware and silverware could be heard throughout the valley due to the acoustic nature of the surroundings. As a result the sixth floor was converted to the private residence of Donald Tresidder, the President of the concessionaire at the time. It remained a private residence until 1970. Now, four couples will enjoy exclusive use of the sixth floor for two nights, with a private VIP dinner served in the Tresidder Library and exclusive use of the Sun Room and Library parlors during your stay. Available during non-peak season, Sunday through Thursday. The option of a naturalist-led hike or a behind the scenes tour of The Ahwahnee is included.
Ansel Adams' iconic photographs of Yosemite engraved the park's stunning beauty and majesty on the minds of Americans. Council Members Jeanne and Michael Adams (Ansel's son and daughter-in-law) invite eight people to join them for dinner and a tour of Ansel's museum-like private residence in Carmel where numerous large format original photographs adorn the walls. Expect unsurpassed culinary creations, sweeping coastal scenery and a personal viewing of Ansel's virtually unchanged darkroom. Enjoy a rare demonstration and inspection of one of Ansel's famous fine prints as well as a peek into the inspiration behind two major black and white photography exhibits currently touring the country (curated by Jeanne Adams). The winning bidder will also receive a signed copy of Annie Leibovitz's book Pilgrimage, featuring a beautiful image of Ansel's darkroom.
One of only 30 copies, this handmade, hand printed, leather bound book from Yolla Bolly Press (1988) was illustrated by Michael McCurdy using twelve stunning wood engravings from Muirs own sketches and photographs. The engravings were printed separately on a hand-operated Colts Armory Press, using a special matte-black ink formulated for this book. The edition is bound in brushed cowhide with endpapers made by hand by Otomi Indians from native tree bark. This very special book is encased in a handmade box of yellow pine with cowhide label on top and is accompanied by a full suite of frameable wood engravings in a chemise of handmade paper. Muirs original journals are from his summer of 1869, five years after the historic signing of the Yosemite Grant.
